Oh, what a night!

Well, according to the National Weather Service (NOAA), see maps below, we are somewhere between 5 and 8 inches above our normal rainfall for the month.  Considering the month just started.  That seems like alot.  Anyway.  I always thought it was suppossed to be April showers bring May flowers!  Not May rain floods my house!!  Last night, Kayce and I were up late watching the storms.  About 3:00am, we started to head up stairs and Kayce noticed the floor at the base of the stairs was wet.  Not only was it wet…  It was saturated, sqwishy even.  So, with great trepidation, I looked in the garage.  Flooded.

After the intial, “ARG”!  We started to move things out of the flood path to the center of the garage.  It wasn’t fun.  The water was coming in through the hole in the wall where our water line enters the house.  We have had this issue before but it a few years ago, and not this bad.  The water was FLOWING in.  Not a drip, not a trickle, flowing!  It was running under the wall into a storage area under our stairs and then out in the finished part of the downstairs.  What a mess.  I’m very thankful we had our clothes in plastic containers.  Everything in cardboard boxes (Kayce’s I Love Lucy memorbilia, and random books) was ruined.  We managed to get all of that out of the crawl space, which had about an 1inch of water in it.  And I set off to try to slow, if not stop, the leak.

This leak is only a problem when the ground is completely saturated, which 8-10 inches in 14 days will do.  I had some plumber’s goop (silicon sealant/adhesive), and some rags at my disposal, so I got to work.  I pumped the hole around the pipe full of goop, and then shoved the rags into it.  The leak slowed, and after the goop had time to setup, it stopped!  Hallelujah!  So, we went to bed.

This morning, most of the water had “gone” away.  I still have to mop up what’s left, and I’ve turned a fan on the crawl space to try to dry it out.  Only a small patch of carpet at the base of the stairs  was wet, so we may not need to replace it all.  Not that we love our carpet anyway, so this would be a good excuse.  Well, that was are night.  Now, everyone at once… “Rain, Rain, Go Away, Come Again in JUNE!
